My wife’s car is getting inspected at a local Toyota dealership, and I’ve got a v6 Camry XSE as a loaner.
And as I said, it’s hilarious. Inside its dead quiet, even when you stand on it there’s really just not much noise. Then you look down and you’re going 90 and it feels and sounds like you’re barely moving. It’s a Camry you wouldn’t want to race if your 5.0 is relatively stock.
It’s also, it should be said, a perfectly nice car.
I’ve had a grudging respect for Camrys since I sold them for a little while a few years ago. They’re an appliance. I get why people buy them...they may not be the best car in the class, but you’re not ever really going to go too far wrong in buying one. But this one is a legitimately nice place to drive from.
Overall I’d give it about an 8/10. It looks good, it’s quiet and comfortable, it's reasonably entertaining, and it's a Toyota so it'll probably be reliable. Neat car.

I don’t get it - it is fast, nice, reliable, comfortable, looks good - what makes it hilarious?

Do you find it fun to drive? Our Solara we had for almost 15 years was all the things you said. It was a great trip car. The only thing is wasn’t was fun to drive (which is not necessarily an indictment in my book).

If the Fusion wasn’t so much better looking, I’d seriously be considering one for our next car.

Dislike the interiors, they are very plasticy (seen less plastic in 90s domestic and I own 2) and are sub-par on layout and feel. Very quiet interior though.

My only issue with it is that transverse V6's are hard to work on.
Too bad there’s no turbo-4 Camry XRS All-Trac

I had to stick up for my neighbor’s purchase of a 4 cylinder Camry once.
We were all sitting around a campfire, and he was telling me that this one guy who works for him makes fun of him all the time for driving it. (as we all have done before)
I told my neighbor to ask him this the next time he brings it up.
“What other mid-sized sedan would you suggest for someone that doesn’t give a shit about cars?
I then told him to wait a few seconds, and interrupt the colleage with this before he said anything.
“Before you answer, think about what car are going to suggest, and remember that I don’t give a shit about cars.”
It worked. The younger enthusiast realized that all of his WRX/Miata/Used Luxury car suggests were no match for the Camry/Accord/Civic/Corolla for someone looking for an appliance sedan.

I think this generation of Camry is reasonably handsome. Still has some predator face in there but its rather subdued compared to its Lexus brethren.

Pretty sure as long as the driver keeps their Mustang straight, there wouldn’t be an issue walking past a Camry.

When's the last time a driver ever kept a Mustang going straight? I should have been more specific on the 5.0 I was talking about, anything from 79-95 stock would have an issue with this Camry.

That it's a Camry and is legitimately, effortlessly fast with no drama.

It’s engaging, but I think I’d need a weekend toy if I owned it. I mean it handles really nice, very flat and grippy. But I’m not impressed with the transmission, it kicks down a gear when you stand on it but there’s a delay before it gets to the gear you want. It’s probably as fun as most people would need a daily to be, I dig it.

This one is pretty good, any of the hard plastics are a high gloss piano black and look not-totally-cheap. It also has a stitched dash and nice faux suede inserts on the doors...I think your regular LE would be cheap feeling, but this one is pleasantly upscale in appearance and feel.

I’d say you probably get more for your money with Mazda, Ford or the Koreans, while still getting a car that fits the needs of appliance car users, but there’s nothing wrong with the Hondas or Toyotas (I find Toyota’s design language to be oppressively ugly, but that’s a matter of personal preference).

This is how I feel. Toyota does charge a premium for their reputation, and people are willing to pay it. You’d get a bit more for your money with a Mazda and not sacrifice anything. For a non-car person, it would come down to reputation, one’s personal aesthetic sense and the deal you get from the dealer.

It probably was but i just remember how cheap it felt and I was thinking this is a 2016? I sat in a new Optima and Accord at the local auto show and felt they both out classed it.

They’ve been like that for more than a decade. You probably just read oppo too much and are influenced by the people that bitch about Camrys for no reason.

Ditto. I’ve even driven a 2010 Corolla and was like “this thing is going 80 and it feels like it’s going 40". Toyota gets a lot of unnecessary hate. Are they appliances? Sure. Bad? Not really.

They are appliances - just like 95% of the cars out there. It is just trendy to hate on Toyota. After all, they only make what people want. If (enough) people wanted to buy a MR2 and a Supra, I’m sure they would offer them.

LOL, he had a Mazda 6 before the Camry, and while he had it, he had to do a clutch, a cat, and it had started rusting in one of the rear wheelwells.
That’s all it takes for some people to hate a brand.
(Never mind the car had close to 100K on it - some people don’t think that way)

Exactly. They’re building to the likes of the majority...and the majority doesn’t give a darned about driving dynamics, magneto suspensions, spec sheets, yadda yadda...they just want a new car that will get them from A to B for however long, for it to be affordable, for it to look modern, and for it to be relatively comfy.
It’s like when my dad goes car shopping...so long as it runs, he’s good to go! lol

True, and Mazda has definitely had rust issues in the past. My understanding is they’ve gotten on top of those at this point though.

A 2006 Camry V6 had 190hp. This car has 268. To say they’ve been this way for more than a decade isn’t exactly true...they've been thought of by everybody as appliances for a good long time and for good reason. It's only been the last maybe five years that they've at least made them pretend to be sporty. I'm not a Camry hater, they're fine cars, I just didn't expect this.

I guess I meant they’ve been able to do stuff effortlessly and without drama for a while. In 2006, BMW 5 series had 215HP out of a same size engine, and it sure was not considered a slouch.
Camry is an amazing car for 99% of the population. Oppo commentators are probably a small part of the leftover 1%.
I guess we agree about everything - I just don’t think that “hillarious” was the word I would have used to describe what you are describing ;)

Yeah, you’re exactly right there...the Camry has felt effortless for a while, they never feel like they’re working hard.
It’s hilarious to me because I think back to when I was like 16 and 300hp was a legit number, like if a car had 300hp that was a big deal and now you can get almost that in a Camry that’s also quiet, safe, and reliable.
I know what you mean though, it’s maybe like the 15th best word to describe it, haha. It just happened to be what I thought when ‘Camry that would whoop most of the pony cars I’ve owned’ became a thing.

I had one as a rental and found the seats hard and the interior kinda crappy. Sure there’s some stitching but the overall vibe wasn’t that nice. I prefer Toyota’s older, more simple interiors because even if they weren’t very interesting, they at least seemed higher quality. This feels like cheaper materials poorly following the latest “premium” interior trends.
I hate that stupid black plastic not-a-window they added to the C-pillar to make it look a bit different from the pre-refresh version, even though the doors are still the exact same shape.
No 5.0 Mustang is in danger of losing to a V6 Camry except for a fox body.

The seats are my least favorite part of the car. They look great, but they’re pretty flat...I can’t get the thigh bolster up enough where I’m comfortable in it, I feel like I’m sliding forward out of the seat whenever I hit the brakes.
I probably should have been more specific on the 5.0 remark, since to me the only Mustang I refer to as a 5.0 is a Fox (or early SN95, but who the hell cares about the SN95?). Of course newer generation 5 liters are around 400hp and the Camry poses no threat, but the Fox and SN95 only ever made about 225hp at their zenith and would have a bad day if they raced this Camry while stock.

Yours would be, yeah...I'm a product of the 80s, when I say 5.0 I mean a Fox or maybe an early SN95. I should have been more specific.
